Sailing or motor yacht — that is the main fork in the road when choosing a rental in Baku. There is no "best" one, just as there is no best car: an estate and a sports car are different tools for different jobs. A sailing yacht gives you quiet, movement under wind and a meditative pace; a motor yacht gives speed, stability and a roomy deck for a large group. A sailing yacht in Baku is, above all, about pace. A speed of 5–7 knots (roughly 9–13 km/h) is slower than a bicycle along the boulevard. When the crew raises the mainsail and the genoa, the engine is shut down, and all that remains is the sound of the wind, the creak of the rigging and the water under the hull. Most guests fall silent in surprise within the first ten minutes — after the noise of the city, the quiet of the water registers as a luxury in its own right.
A sail runs on wind, not on fuel. That has three practical consequences:
- The route is partly dictated by the weather. You cannot sail straight into the wind — you have to beat, making tacks (zigzags). This is not an inconvenience but part of the genre: for those who came for "real sailing", tacking is half the pleasure.
- In a flat calm the yacht may simply sit. If there is no wind at all, the skipper will start the auxiliary engine and proceed under it. The trip will still happen, but the impressions will be different — without the characteristic heel and the pull of the sails.

A motor yacht solves different problems. Speed in Baku Bay is usually 15–25 knots (28–46 km/h), which means you can reach Boyuk Zira island in 20–30 minutes instead of an hour and a half under sail. If the programme is tight and you want to fit everything in — that is an argument.
Stability is the second key difference. A motor yacht does not depend on the wind and keeps to its own schedule. Light wind, flat calm, fresh breeze — the departure timetable barely changes. In normal running there is no heel: the yacht runs level, glasses stay on the table, children are not frightened.
The deck and cockpit on a motor yacht are, as a rule, roomier. That means:
- A laid table for 8–12 people fits without a crush
- Children have room to move without catching on lines and rigging
- Swimming is easier — many motor yachts have a bathing platform aft with a ladder; on a sailing yacht it is often absent or more compact
There are downsides too. Engine noise is always present — not deafening, but the background is there. It does not drown out conversation, and it overrides music only at full speed. Fuel consumption is built into the rental price, but indirectly it affects the limit: on long full-day trips operators may want to firm up the route so as not to overrun. On standard 3–6 hour programmes you do not feel it.
When to choose a motor yacht:
- A corporate event, team building, an outing with colleagues — a format with a laid table and some momentum
- A birthday with a large group (from 8 people upwards)

The basic market picture for 2026:
- Sailing yachts — predominantly the 30–40 foot classes: boats from Bavaria and Beneteau (Oceanis series) are common. There are cabins on board, but within a day charter they are rarely used — this is a technical option for an overnight stay, not part of the standard cruise programme.
- Motor yachts (powerboats) — of various classes, from compact options for 8–10 people to roomier models. The market's starting rate is from 500–550 AZN for the first hour.
The main marina for rentals is the Baku Central Yacht Club on Baku Boulevard. Part of the fleet is also based in the Sea Breeze area north of the city — which makes it possible to start from different points of the bay depending on the route.
Contrary to a common misconception, sailing charter in Baku is not "summer only". A sail is seaworthy year-round — the keel damps the heel, and range does not depend on a fuel reserve. The seasonality of a sailing trip is a question of passenger comfort (in winter it is brisk in the wind) and of demand, not of any design limitation of the yacht.
What the choice costs
In money the difference between the types is noticeable.
Sailing yacht. The first hour — from 150 to 300 AZN depending on the model (from a budget option to a premium sailing yacht). A cumulative discount makes longer trips better value: 3 hours — from ~700 AZN, 6 hours — from ~1,250 AZN.
Motor yacht. The first hour — from 550 AZN. For 3 hours — around 1,050 AZN, for 6 hours — about 1,470 AZN, for 9 hours — about 1,800 AZN.
On a 6-hour trip the difference works out at roughly 1.2 times. If budget is the factor, a sailing yacht gives you a longer outing for the same money. If the factor is speed and space, a motor yacht earns back the difference in comfort and in the number of places on board.

If there is a flat calm, is a sailing yacht money wasted?
No. In a complete calm the skipper will start the auxiliary engine and the trip will go ahead — you will see the bay, stop at an anchorage, have a swim. The impressions will simply be different — without the characteristic run under sail. Finding out the weather in advance with any guarantee is usually impossible: the Baku wind is changeable, and a calm morning often turns into a fresh breeze by midday.
Does a motor yacht mean without a skipper?
No. In Baku both types of yacht are chartered with crew — a skipper and, if needed, a mate. Bareboat charter without a skipper effectively does not exist as a format for tourists in Baku: it requires a certificate at ICC or IYT level, and the rental is arranged under a different scheme.
Can you try both in one day?
